With over 600 million active internet users and one of the lowest data rates in the world, India has been at the forefront of a digital revolution that has enabled enterprises, especially small and medium-sized businesses and startups, to chart new frontiers of growth. For many of these businesses, the push for connectivity helped them carve a niche for themselves with their own brand.
The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) has helped hundreds of businesses across sectors and sizes distinguish themselves as a brand with its .in or .Bharat domain — which is India’s Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD). In a journey that spans over 17 years, the internet exchange has been a part of several success stories from various sectors that have demonstrated the business potential of a robust online brand. From creating an online presence and facilitating branding to gaining a competitive edge, getting a .in or .Bharat domain empowered these enterprises to get credibility along with the trust of their consumers, while being accessible with just a few clicks. NIXI is among the only internet exchanges in the world to offer a ccTLD in multiple languages. By opting for a .in and .Bharat, one can choose between 22 languages for a domain name.
The Shaping India's .INc's online growth series chronicles the journeys of these businesses and how creating an online presence on the .in or .Bharat domain powered their success stories. These businesses were built with a focus to establish an online presence that could help them scale with limited resources. The series highlights how businesses were able to capitalise on the benefits of digitisation, while also featuring insights from industry experts.
Registered in 2003, NIXI is a non-profit organisation that was set up to facilitate peering among Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and to route domestic traffic within the country, rather than doing it via other nations.
Routing domestic traffic through the country has led to reduced latency and lower bandwidth charges for ISPs. The internet exchange runs on a neutral basis and follows guidelines that are in line with global best practices. The .in or .Bharat domain is managed by INRegistry. In 2004, the Indian government delegated the operations of INRegistry to NIXI.
